Doggy dog world

Today, I reached down to pet an elderly man's dog. It jumped up and utterly mauled my face, drawing blood. As I gasped in shock and pain, the man said, "Careful, he likes to scratch." FML

Did you ask first before you pet? If you did, then FYL. If you didn't, then YDI. Always ask before you pet a stranger animal.

You never pet someone's dog without their permission. They could be a rescue dog who doesn't like strangers, easily excitable, or they could be a dog for disabilities. I'm sorry you got attacked and the guy seemed uncaring but dude ydi

If you didn't ask first then it's your fault

Should've asked. Obviously the guy knew he wouldn't be friendly.

So it scratched your face. I'm sorry I know that sucks and stings but when people act like this it just causes issues. The dog didn't maul you. Stop being so damn dramatic. As an owner of a German Shepherd who is constantly called vicious, aggressive, or scary just because of his size when he tries to play I lack tolerance and patience when people, like you, who probably didn't even ask to pet the dog, whine and bitch. Try being kicked by a 1200lb animal in to a barbed wire fence and then come whine.

Yeah, get 'em! Haha! A good friend of mine has a big, beautiful German Shepard who catches the same crap. The pup is well trained, very friendly, and playful, too. But due to size and being grouped in with seemingly aggressive dog breeds, he's feared by many. Where I'm from animals are not respected, and often become strays or so aggressive that they need to be put down (at which point, owners often pass them off to someone else or 'set them free'). We have a lot of issues with wild dogs attacking people and killing livestock for sport. Folks blame coyotes and hunt them relentlessly, however turn a blind eye to the wild cats and dogs who are actually behind the majority of incidents. Anywho, one would think folks would learn a thing or two from these wild animals and to not simply walk up to something cute and fluffy just simply because it looks soft and you think your magical, pure, virginal soul can turn all terrified or territorial animals into friends... *grumble grumble* Assuming OP didn't ask before approaching the critter, YDI. If they did ask, still... if you're not familiar with the animal, you shouldn't be messing with it, period.

Always ask the owner before trying to pet a random dog! This situation could have ended A LOT worse honestly. My grandpa's guard dog sent a woman to the hospital to get stitches all over her arm because she tried to feed him. Not even petting, feeding!

Always ALWAYS approach a dog slowly and allow it to get used to your scent before you try to touch it. This is basic stuff!! YDI!!

Or just ask before petting someone else's animal?

Well **** me, I assumed that was a given. You can have all the owner permission in the world, it won't stop a cranky animal from biting your face off because you didn't take the time to let it get used to you

It is common etiquette to always ask permission before petting a dog you have never encountered before. YOU TOTALLY DESERVED IT!

As a dog owner myself, I'm surprised at the amount of people that don't ask of my dog is friendly, even if she is, before they touch her. Sorry OP ydi

It's especially mind boggling when those people are also dog owners

While I feel sorry for you, its ALWAYS best to ask before touching another persons pet.

This is why you ask the owner before petting a dog you've never met before. Not every dog is friendly, OP. It isn't safe to assume they are just because they're out on a walk. I hope you heal quickly and that you've learned a valuable lesson.
