Today, I told my mom about how my friend is going to China for a year instead of college. My mom suggested that I could do the same. When I told her that a trip to China is probably more expensive than my college tuition, my mom replied, "Not for a one way ticket". FML

I don't see how this is a FML, if you're staying there for a year, it is cheaper to by a one way ticket. When you decide to leave, you buy another one way ticket. I know people who do this all the time. Doesn't mean you're mom hates you.

Actually, one-way tickets AREN'T cheaper. They're usually twice as expensive. Get a round-trip ticket. Example: Round-trip from Minneapolis to Tokyo (or vice-versa) in the summer costs about $1,600. One-way is closer to $3,000. Though, if you were to go to Tokyo in May, the costs goes down to about $800, and from there you could buy a dirt-cheap ticket to China. Now, there's an idea. And depending on where you're going and their visa laws, some airports won't let you into the country without a return ticket. I know coming to Tokyo, you have to have a return flight (or you have to be leaving the country to go somewhere else) within 90 days or they detain and deport you.

To be fair it can sometimes be cheaper to buy two one way tickets instead of one round trip. Especially if you're going on an extended trip.
