i never understood this. is a 2 dollar tip really gonna matter? besides, you want someone to pay you for doing a good job? umm isn't that the restaurant's job?
It's called servers wages. No the restaurant does not pay the waiters. Not really. Usually about two dollars an hour... They live off their tips. And you're supposed to tip ten to fifteen percent. That would be 70 dollars that the busser just threw in the garbage... And gratuity is usually automatically added to the bill for parties of ten or more but they usually tip on top of that too...
It was your only table AND you had a busser? YDI as you shouldve been on top of that slip period. Plus, as a waitress in a place that doesn't do auto gratuity usually we could always ask management to auto do 15-18% in certain situation (like huge parties or bills over $300). If it makes you feel any better - if it was a company credit card then those groups usually tip below %10 anyways.
If it was on the table instead of being in the book. She had probably already picked up the book and not realized that the slip wasn't in there. And then the dumb ass of a busser threw it away
Also- for those of you thinking waitressings easy you have no clue. $2 an hour and dealing with general public? Plus some of us are own own busser, handle trash removal, cleaning etc Now bartending - that's easy! $10+ an hour plus tips (including tip outs from waitresses who do all the food work and delivery for you).
Wow, that really does suck, but there has to be something you can do. As others mentioned, I would think that the charge would not be considered valid if the receipt was not signed, especially on an amount that high. It is hard to say exactly what the OP was doing, but I am sure she was trying to no hover over the group. I hope the busser got into trouble.
i never understood this. you want someone to pay you for doing a good job? doesn't the restaurant already do that?
Yes, I do want someone to pay me for doing a good job because even though it SHOULD be the restaurant's job, they don't pay us for it because anyone with half a brain realizes that we don't get paid by the restaurant and tips us...so we supposedly make up for the restaurant's lack of payment in tips.
Your boss is out $700 and all you're worried about is your tip... wtf
The boss isn't out $700. The first reason being the boss did not pay $700 for the food that was prepared. The boss would be out probably $300-$500 in food and labor at the most. However the boss still isn't out $700... The card was already swiped to pre-approve it before the copy of the reciept comes back that you write the tip amount on. Without the receipt with the tip amount, however, the server can only charge the card (which is already in the system) the value of the meal.
Oh my god. That's awful. D:
I'm terribly sorry! that's horrible, I know how that feels. We've had waitresses running after people because they never signed the slip, or something's been thrown out. Credit cards can be such hassels! You should of at least put in 15% in this case (I think anyways), because it's absurd not to get tipped! Yes some restaurants add a 18% gratituity to larger parties but at the same time alot don't. *I've been bussing tables for over a year now, and I've never thrown out a credit card slip. That busperson should be spoken with!* & a subtle "SCREW YOU" to all the idiots who thought otherwise. the food biz SUCKS. People who work hard often get screwed over by idiots who don't know how to tip properly. The minimun should be 15% a.k.a. you should be tipping somewhere around 20%. I've only tipped less than 15% once, at T.G.I.F. where the waitress was inattentive, rude, slow, & screwed up our orders (there were only 3 of us, with simple, not complex orders) and sent our food to the wrong table. but in summation to my rant, the people who serve you bust their arses, IT'S NOT EASY, AND 'THE CUSTOMER IS NOT ALWAYS RIGHT!' don't go out if you can't afford to tip. it's part of the process so please, tip responsibly =)
i never cared for leaving tips until my sister became a server and she explained everything to me. although... i dont know where you guys live where waiters/waitresses are getting paid $2. we live in CA and she gets about $9/hr
Most of the country, actually. We west coasters have figured it out and know how to treat the service industry properly, but most of the country has a lower minimum wage for waitstaff. One of the worst is, in fact, New York, where OP is from.

Oh wow, fyl and you should complain about that busser.
Are you kidding me? They were your only table and you weren't able to get there before the busser to collect your receipt? YDI
