Long haul

By ripped off and blown out - 08/06/2017 00:00

Today, I was driving to visit my parents for the first time in two years. After spending about $4000 to make sure my car wouldn't break down on the journey, around the halfway point, the front tire popped and the engine blew out. I'm about 5 states away from both my parents and my home. FML

If you've spend $4000 on repairs, your car already was dead. You can spend as much as you want on your gravestone, but it ain't gonna bring you back to life!

Not to be rude op, but why didn't you just fly down and pay for a rental car? It would've been a lot cheaper. A bus or train could've worked if you're scared of flying and still would've been cheaper.

you could have flown for less than 4 grand...

There are internal engine parts that may be going out, but it would be impossible to tell unless you break the engine down to check. Also, be careful with our of state shops, they know you are not from around so they might be shady telling you the engine is blown when in fact it's only a minor problem. They know you must get it fixed to get back home.

The downside to your advice is exactly what you point out: OP HAS to get home. Which means they have to get it fixed, and the shop knows that. Meaning they can charge whatever and refuse to go down or negotiate. Maybe technically OP could refuse to pay, but they don't know that and if a mechanic shop is filled with enough assholes to overcharge you because you are from out of state, the people that work there are big enough assholes to come up with a reason to make it so OP can't get their car back without paying.

$4000 would buy a lot of plane tickets. YDI

Probably would have been cheaper to just rent a car.

Five states away from both your parents and home? Were you driving all the way across the country or do you live in New England?
