couldnt he have just said your name instead of having to get a whole new poem for one word that he already knew?
FINALLY somebody realises how weird it is that he is just reading the poem and keeps reading the other girls name! wouldn't he see the name first and then go "oh - note to self insert real gfs name here" FAKE
Lame. If he's gonna read her a poem he wrote for her, he should have written it FOR HER! Specifically. It's great if someone inspires an artist to create... it shouldn't be dumbed down like that. :(
i'd say FYL, but i'm so annoyed that you wrote he "proceeded to say", so i'm gonna say YDI(:
Ok, to all you irritating grammar nazi's out there: STFU! You are RUINING the FML comment feature. When I hover my cursor over the number under an FML I want to see a sample of what the general FML community felt about this particular FML. But when you crap it up with your stupid long-ass comments about grammar it PISSES ME OFF IMMENSELY because nowww I have to right-click then open in new tab to read the follow-up and that COMPLETELY defeats the purpose of having the comments come up when you hover your cursor! And you're teacher's-pet/"I-told-you-so" behavior is pointless, and CHILDISH. Jesus, just recognize that you're better with the english language than that person. Or that maybe they feel this venue of communication calls for a less formal syntax? Ever think of that?! I get it that it's irritating when they say your instead of you're... I really do, I'm with you. But it's more irritating to have to scroll through paragraphs of english lessons when I'm trying to laugh at cold-hearted comments!
Pretty sure that only made me want to go out of my way to do just this now. Rage up more nerd.
Um... sorry?
"But it's more irritating to have to scroll through paragraphs of english lessons when I'm trying to laugh at cold-hearted comments!" While your paragraph was certainly no english lesson it makes you a hypocrite. Thanks for telling me about what's wrong with the comment feature while simultaneously destroying the comment feature. Takes a special kinda person to do that. On another note, I love how my little comment sparked a war of literacy. The victor? Mobius8!
I love how you feel like you have the ability to claim the victor, especially in a comment full of incomplete and run-on sentences. :) It actually only proves to further my point, really.
"Proves my point", "further proves my point" or "furthers my point". Not "proves to further my point". You should start paying me for tutoring tbh.
Unfortunately for you, everyone who read and followed the less than coherent grammar debate would declare Mobius8 the victor. You had to use 3 different dictionaries to attempt to prove your point when Mobius8 uses the Oxford dictionary. Oxford is the only dictionary worth citing, it is the dictionary that all other dictionaries defer to. Mobius8 wins on that point alone.
Haha, okay, again with the "it's the only real dictionary evar!" debate. You're really declaring that single, concise dictionary can contain every definition for every word in the English language? Because that's obviously not the case if I can find different definitions elsewhere.
"'Proves my point', 'further proves my point' or 'furthers my point'. Not 'proves to further my point'. You should start paying me for tutoring tbh." Okay, sweetie, again, real slow since you obviously can't understand basic English... If you can say, "furthers my point," why the **** couldn't you say, "This proves to further my point?" If you were to take the meaning of the words and expand, it's like saying, "This provides evidence(proves) to support my claim(point) to a greater extent or degree (further)." Again, just because you haven't seen it used that way, or because you simply can't wrap your mind around a certain word usage, doesn't mean every OTHER way is wrong. Welcome to the wonderful and dynamic world of language. And just FYI, I would hope anyone offering tutoring services would know that punctuation belongs INSIDE the quotations marks - just for future reference. :) ALSO: He didn't use the complete Oxford Dictionary. He used the Compact Oxford Dictionary. There's a difference there; if you don't know it, it's that the compact dictionary is - GET THIS - more compact than the original, with fewer definitions, despite his claim that they only took out "lengthy examples."
Because it would be like me saying "you can stop replying to respond because you're just embarrassing yourself" instead of "you can stop replying because you're just embarrassing yourself" or "you can stop responding because you're just embarrassing yourself". Seriously, is English your second language or something? There's nothing wrong if it is, it's just you should probably not try to correct others until you've finished your ESOL classes. Saying "dynamic language" doesn't actually stop it just being a bad grasp of English. The punctutation is outside the quotation marks because I'm not quoting it you ******* retard. It's the punctuation for the sentence and not, obviously, from what I was quoting. Do you not get how commas work? I used the Concise Oxford Dictionary, not compact, and have already painstakingly explained in the simplest terms I can what that word means. It's the only definition by Oxford Dictionaries for "literacy" and you still have yet to provide another one from any source. Are you done embarrassing yourself or is self-humiliation kind of your thing?
No actually, it isn't like that at all. It's like I said earlier in my post; it's a perfectly legitimate use of the English language, and you're just embarrassing yourself by grasping for anything you can to try and prove me wrong. I just looked it up, and I apologize for calling you out on the punctuation if you're from the UK. However, if you're from the US, periods and commas always go inside the quotation marks regardless of whether or not you're quoting the material. And I have provided another definition from multiple other dictionaries, but obviously you're just choosing to ignore that information. :)
You saying it doesn't actually make it true. Anyone(most Americans are particular apt at this so I guess you do have an advantage I don't) can make up a rule for English and say it's legitimate. The problem arises when people who actually have a decent grasp on their first language (a shocking thought, I know, but you'll have to take my word for it that this does actually happen) point out that it's bullshit and you're trying to cover your ass for being wrong, wrong, wrong. Punctuation for non-quoted text goes outside the quotation marks no matter what English speaking country you're from you retard. You've quoted one dictionary that's heavily criticized, for the obscure definitions of a word we weren't discussing because it is referenced in the second definition for the word we were, despite the fact it's retarded to take the most obscure definition of a word as the reference for the word in question and despite the fact there already is a word for what you're trying to define literacy as and despite the fact that no one has ever used literacy in the way you're trying to.
Also, "multiple other dictionaries" is bad grammar. "multiple dictionaries" or "many other dictionaries". KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!
http://grammartips.homestead.com/inside.html And no one has ever used it the way I have except for Cambridge, I guess. *shrug* Good enough for me.
The internet is international. I'm not going to start using aboriginal slang in my English and admonishing people for not getting my illogical grammar usage because they're not from my country.
So let's just point out where you were wrong here... "Punctuation for non-quoted text goes outside the quotation marks no matter what English[-]speaking country you're from you retard." Let's see how advanced you are in "the important life skill of gracefully accepting when you're very much in the wrong." So, are you from the UK? Or are you simply trying to cover up the fact that you're American and simply weren't aware of your own country's grammar rules?
Well with that stunning display of world knowledge I guess I don't need to guess at whether or not you're American. No, I'm not from the UK or America. Shockingly, there are a number other English speaking countries that speak English. Aboriginal is from the UK, right?
* It's English-speaking. It's hyphenated. Also, "...English speaking countries that speak English..."? I mean, really? Was that repetition necessary? And I'm sorry I didn't automatically assume that just because you used Aboriginal slang as an example that you're Australian. You see, not ONLY Australians know about Aboriginals. I know; it's shocking. Oh, and good job with your graceful acceptance of being wrong. It's really touching.
I missed a word and meant "correct English" and as someone who tried to defend their sentence of "proves to further my point" you're not really one to speak of repetition. Stop being a silly little bitch because you thought literacy meant literariness and got called out on being wrong while correcting someone.
Sure thing. I'll get on that as soon as you stop being a silly bitch who refuses to admit when he's wrong. :)
Why would I say I was wrong when every dictionary and person here agrees with me?
Well, first of all, every dictionary DOES NOT agree with you, but at this point I honestly don't expect you to acknowledge this. And I can't believe you're citing support from random people on the Internet as a legitimate reason to believe you're correct. ALSO: You still refuse to admit you were wrong about the commas in the quotation marks. Why? Would it really be that big a blow to your self-esteem?
Yes it does. Every dictionary agrees with me. No where does any definition of literacy imply a skill in poetry. Combine fact that no dictionary agrees with you the fact you can't get a single person to agree with you either and it's pretty relevant to you being completely wrong.
"It's the only definition by Oxford Dictionaries for "literacy" and you still have yet to provide another one from any source." You are wrong here. I have proven you wrong here by quoting a DIFFERENT DEFINITION FOR LITERACY from ANOTHER SOURCE, and yet, despite this, you refuse to admit that you were wrong here, (or anywhere, for that matter - it seems to be a serious issue with you). What's to make me think you'd admit to being wrong anywhere else, even if you knew you were? It really hurts your point.
It's the same definition. Unless you take the last definition for literacy that you quoted, and then illogically use the most obscure definition for the word it references and then assume (wrongly) that that also applies to poetry and then also pretend that the word literariness doesn't already exist for the definition you're trying to duct tape to a held down hostage of the poor word literacy, but who would be idiotic enough to do that and think it a valid argument. Oh wait...
Uh-huh, baby. :) You're right all the time. How silly of me. I hope I didn't hurt your poor little ego by suggesting differently.
Don't call me baby like you're attempting to be condescending in lieu of the ability to defend yourself or the ability to back down when you're wrong.
You can't determine who's right by who argues the longest. After arguing for a few days, yes, I've given up the ghost. It's pointless to argue with you because you have such a narcissistic attitude that you refuse to even entertain the notion that - hey! - you might be wrong from time to time. Even when I clearly and definitively prove you wrong, (the commas in quotations, etc), you find a way to avoid admitting it. So what is to make me think you'd EVER admit to being wrong on our main point? As I said, it is honestly pointless. So don't act like I'm admitting to being wrong by simply giving up on you. You could have had the same effect by yelling "NUH-UH" the whole time, and honestly, you probably would have come off better.
If you're still replying, you're still wasting your time and just proving that it's not a time issue that prevents you from proving your point. And better off than what? Everyone agreeing with, and telling you to shut up because you're wrong and being stupid? I'm not wrong. The definition for literacy is pretty blatantly clear. The definition you're trying to apply to it is pretty blatantly for the definition literariness. It's pretty blatantly clear you're wrong, and arrogant, and too up your own ass to admit either.
Okay, how many times do you have to repeat yourself before you feel like you've said it enough? Honestly, you should probably see someone about your avoidance/narcissism issues, if only for your own sake. (Just as a side note, haven't we been in an argument here before? Not the "congrats on your pregnancy" one, but a long time ago? It's driving me crazy. Maybe the FML where some girl doused herself with sprite to impress a guy?)
When the very basic concept of the definition for the two words gets through your thick skull, or when you realise that it's simply beyond your ability to comprehend and you go hassle your carer instead of people you keep wrongly correcting. And I don't know or care. If we did, you were wrong.
Haha, okay. Again, avoidance/narcissism issues. Remember, ignoring the problem only makes it worse. Also, that's really mature of you, and only proves my point that you are incapable of even flirting with the notion that you're not always right. It's beyond you, which injures any argument you could ever make.
I think the fact you're still replying while avoiding the subject you brought up, and refused to admit you were undeniably wrong about speaks far larger volumes about your own avoidance and narcissism issues. I've replied to every flawed argument you've tried to make about why you think the definition for literariness is really the secret definition for literacy and explained why they're flawed. You're the one now avoiding the subject while refusing to stop throwing insults around like a 3 year old who can't get its own way.
What don't you understand about the fact that I'm not arguing the original point anymore? I've stopped. I'm over it. It's pointless. We were getting nowhere. Need I say more? If you honestly feel the need to argue it further, look elsewhere. Stop responding. Okay?
"the fact that I'm not arguing the original point anymore" - avoidance "Stop responding (because I need the last word because I act like a spoiled little 3 year old not getting my own way and everyone has to listen to what I say)" - narcissism
Okay bb, if it makes you feel better to completely ignore my previous posts, take two statements out of context and tack completely inapplicable titles on them, go ahead. :)
The thing is, I haven't avoided your previous posts because I'm not the one with avoidance issues. You're the one who has decided not to argue your original point anymore and ignored my responses to your weak arguments, but is still here trying to have the last word despite that because you have the maturity of a 3 year old who hasn't gotten its own way.
mobius8, theanonimouse, Now might be a good time for each of you to concede just ONE point to each other. "I thought about it and I agree with you that ______", or "You convinced me that _________." It could be a relatively minor or insignificant point. You might be interested where things go after that. I'm just sayin'. . .
Mobius, I realize that these posts were made a long time ago, but I have to say that you were being one ignorant, stubborn fool right here. You are completely incorrect, were proven so, but still defended your point just because your opponent didn't have the #1 definition for the word? Grow up and admit when you're wrong.
Just like all people of a particular race don't carry the same characteristics, artists aren't all the same either. Thanks very much.

Why the hell would you even try to give a girl a second poem afte you already messed up like that? FAIL on his part, FYL.
So start to blow him, then stop midway saying, "Shit--wrong dick".
