No shame

By bluewatersify - This FML is from back in 2010 but it's good stuff - Australia

Today, I got a letter in the mail, my mother has applied for a reduction in her child support payments for my brother and me. She's paid $10 child support in 16 years. FML

Wow.. Parent of the Year right there. :-/

"Welcome to the 21st Century"?! The the biggest load of bullshit I've heard #7!! This woman chose to squeeze these two kids out of her uterus, therefore she is just as responsible for raising and supporting them as the father. And I guarantee that if it was the father who was stiffing them on child support and ignoring their existence, you'd be calling him a deadbeat father. OP, you're better off without her in your life.

Agree 100% with Angrynegro7. My mom cheated on my dad and ran off when I was ~5, leaving him with 3 daughters to raise alone (he's the last living person on his side of the family so he had no one to rely on). The eldest is hers from another man, he adopted when he married her, but as far as he was concerned, she was his little girl. How much in child support did my dad receive? $0. To #7: Respect your mother just because she gave birth? What the hell does that even mean? If my dad was the one to cheat and run off leaving my mom with 3 kids, would you say my dad deserves respect? No you wouldn't. Don't be such an ignorant prick.

Ok, just as a question, why the hell would YOU recieve said letter. It would, in most cases, be served to the father. IDK, if that's different in Australia, but I can honestly say that there is no reason for one of the children to recieve that letter. Also, your father could have reported it. She can still be liable for all the back support she never paid. My assumption is that he probably thought that it's better to not have her around or involved than to go after her for the money. Good for your dad, in that case.

That was exactly my question. Why would the OP recieve the letter when it seems like it should be meant for the father. Isn't there some kind of law against reading other people's mail? (Is it different in Australia?) OP, your mom's a little unreliable about her child support apparently. Is she having financial troubles? Also, don't you have to pay child support if you aren't the one raising/supporting the child(s)?

YDI for not knowing the different between "me and my brother" and "my brother and I".

@31: Not in the US. It's the full amount or they can absolutely go after them. And if the mother only paid 10 dollars in 16 years, thats a whole lot more than not paying the full amount.

This second comment didn't belong here!

There are so many things grammatically wrong with this FML. Let me rewrite this in English. Today, I got a letter in the mail. My mother has applied for a reduction in her child support payments for my brother and me. She's paid $10 for child support over sixteen years. FML. Grammar Police is over and out.

I really do think your father should report her, but also, you should think twice before talking to her or contacting her. She doesn't care about you or your brother at this point in time, which is a shame. It is her loss, not yours.

Applying for a reduction when you haven't paid jack, means there's a good chance she's gonna get busted.
