Rejection

By creditwhore - 24/02/2010 19:13 - United States

Today, I decided to apply for a credit card to help build up my credit rating. It seemed smart since I'm a 24 year-old college graduate. I was rejected for not having a credit history. Being rejected turns out to hurt your credit history. The irony of my predicament is too great for words. FML

I don't understand this at all. Credit Card companies used to have people on my college campus all the time because, since most of us didn't have a credit history, it was easier to get credit cards. Here's my advice. Open up a secured line of credit with your bank. You give them a certain amount of cash, and they put it on a card for you. That card works like a credit card on your credit score, but you don't get into crazy debt over it. It's prepaid.

Depending on who you're banking with you can get this card that is sort of your training wheels for the future. You put 200$ in an account then they give you a card with a 200$ limit to use. If you use this card correctly they will then give you a full fledged credit card. Look into it, it sucks but in the end it's worth it.

There are always a few companies that will give you a credit card without credit history. I know this for a fact as I got my first credit card from Capital One. Sure the interest rate is TERRIBLE and your limit is low, but they tell you how to bump up your limit if you need to and once you have a little credit, you can find another card. It seems that once you have one, they never stop sending you new offers (Just read the fine print! ha) They aren't necessarily the devil if you handle them right either. If you go out and buy things you can't actually afford and only pay the minimum..then yes they are bad. But if you go make regular purchases on small items and pay off the ENTIRE balance every month, they're actually pretty nifty. I find that I saw a bigger jump in my credit rating after I got my school loan and car loan, so maybe that's a better route. And, for those who think you don't need credit, you are VERY wrong. There are more things than just a house that can be affected by a credit score. If you want to buy a car, if you want an apartment in some cases, Hell, even my dining room table needed us to have credit. And I would much rather build credit before I'm 20 than to start worrying about what I'm going to do when I need things that require credit.

The same thing happened to my brother. He never could get a credit card because of the same reason and therefore couldn't do ANYTHING because he had no credit at all. He eventually took out a small loan ($500) and paid it back over time and he finally built up some credit. I suggest doing the same thing.

Need a dining room table save up for a paycheck or two. Need a car if you've been saving guess what take the money out and buy that new car or even better save the 10-15 k and look on car finder and buy a used one you can find amazing cars for less then 5k sometimes even from dealers themselves. Need an apartment many will rent to people without even looking at your credit score if you have a well paying job and good references. You do not need credit to live at all. What you do need is a good savings account, some sort of budget and the ability to not live beyond your means.

Because people shouldn't be allowed to want a new car or an actual house even if they can afford them. Why just live when you have the means to live more comfortably?

Some banks have a credit card called a secured card. You give them money up front and then use it like a credit card. WaMu had it but when Chase took over they cancled the program.

This ^^^ Also, you can get a student credit card (may require a parent), or even some loans and memberships will show up on your credit history.

Isn't that a debit card? Do those even build your credit rating? I have a debit card but it also has my mom's name on it because I'm a minor :P So if that is giving me a good credit score already, MLIG :D

number 21 has a bright future with COLLAGES but I doubt any COLLEGES will be accepting him/her! this country is going down hill fast!

"The irony of my predicament is too great for words." lol love that ending. be careful with credit cards because they suck the life out of you! 

Getting a credit card isn't all that great of an idea to build your credit. Most banks offer credit building loans and the interest won't bankrupt you like it can with credit cards. Try giving that a shot instead.
