The fumes from paint can make a human sick if submerged in them for too long, I would think the same thing would be true for the cat. I don't know if it would necessarily kill the cat but it could make them sick. Plus now the cat is covered in paint and cats use their tongues to clean themselves and therefore it would likely be digesting paint which can make it sick because it's not meant to be eaten. In any case I have to say I feel bad for the cat more than I do for the OP.

most of the paint used these days is waterbased and completely harmless, although oil based paint are still used they are generally only used on the wood work (skirtings, doorframes etc).
