When I was young my mother his a dog. OP doesn't say his / her age but my mom told me later (when she wasn't driving) that she could have avoided it, but that would have meant going into the oncoming lane (when traffic was coming) perhaps she (as my mom did) weighed the lives of the humans in the car against the dogs. Sorry but the dog loses in this case. This is why dog owners have a responsibility to keep their pets out of the road.
Yes, but you can also check to see if it's alive and get it help if it can. Accidents happen, but step up and deal with it. Don't run away and pretend it didn't happen.
Your mom should have stopped. it wasn't he fault the dog got hit but she should have stopped. But also someone else is resposible for keeping that dog safe and they didn't. They allowed him to get lose. And before you say anything. I had a dog that could jump the fence, and we built a taller fence to keep him from escaping and getting hurt. Pet owners have a responsibility too.
I'm NOT entirely sure about in New York, but I know in New Hampshire one can actually face jail time for a Hit N Run from NOT reporting it EVEN with it being "jus" a Dog N NOT human,.
birds and bunnies are small and most likely wouldn't have survived but a dog is different and could possibly have survived at least long enough to get it to a vet or something. Even so, you don't hit a dog and while your child is upset or trying to talk (possibly calmly about it, we don't know) about it, just ignore them.
Honestly, while sometimes it's totally the owners fault we can't forget times where the driver is at fault. My dog was hit right in front of our house, on a street that many kids are usually on, with children running after her after they accidentally let her out. The speed limit is low, but the car was driving fast and didn't slow at all. The only reason a child wasn't hit was because someone grabbed him right before he ran out. They never stopped or anything. Accidents happen..but if you drive off without checking on them I can't help but look negatively to you. If the person had stopped, I wouldn't see them badly. If they drove safely, it probably wouldn't have happened. But even if it had, I could forgive them for actually stopping and being at least somewhat sympathetic.
I think when she starts denying it... It turns into a criminal offense of some sort.
That's no excuse for not stopping. For all we know they dog didn't die and it laid there suffering until someone else came along and found it.
When I was young, I was helping my mother bring groceries into the house from the trunk of the car. My dog ran out on me and made a bee line right to the street. Yes, some idiot came barreling down the street at that exact moment and ran over my dog, they didn't even slow down, just kept going. My mom was so pissed that she hopped into the car and chased them. She didn't even close the trunk. She eventually lost the car that hit my dog. Somehow, my mom managed to find a vet that does home visits. My little Roxy was still alive but she was in so much pain. They had to put her down right in my living room.
I'm sorry for your loss. I know it must have been painful. I will never understand why people will just leave the animal to die when it's their fault for hitting them. Take some responsibility people. Did you know there are some who intentionally swerve out of their way to run over animals? Like the animal could be on the side of the road and someone will run them over on purpose. I know this isn't the case most of the time, but it shows you just how bad people are.
Sometimes hitting an animal is unavoidable. Once hit a possum because there wasn't a safe option to avoid it, or stop in time. Poor little guy, but better the possum then putting my life in danger.
Sounds pretty heartless. At least if she stopped to see if bringing the pup to the vet she might save it. That's someone's pet.

Don't think about it morty!
However, if you wish to be considered an adult, you have to take responsibility for your actions. That means if you hit someone's pet, you stop the car to see if there's a vet needed and try to locate the owners if possible. Just continuing driving and pretending nothing's happened is not only irresponsible, it's immature.
