Save the doggo

Today, I was driving down the road when a dog suddenly ran across the street. In attempt to spare its life, I swerved to the side of the road and rear-ended another car. The car I hit belonged the family who owned the dog. Now I have to pay them because I saved their dog's life. FML

You know what they say, no good deed goes unpunished.

That's like the other day I swerved to avoid hitting a squirrel right as another squirrel ran under my tire. Except I didn't have to pay damages to the original squirrel.

Swerving for an animal is a judgment call. If you don't mind the risk of damaging your own or someone else's car (and having to pay for it), by all means swerve. Otherwise, brake.

Sorry, YDI. You were the one that swerved, you were the one that hit the car. If your area has leash laws, you might be able to get out of it by calling the cops and telling them what happened.

This. If there are leash laws in your area, and you panicked, swerving out of the way because they aren't properly leashing and taking care of their dog, I'm sure you could argue in court that the reason that you hit them in the first place was because of their neglectful pet-ownership.

General rule ... only swerve your car for sentient beings (humans) or anything large enough to come through the windshield (small deer-size and up). Everything else ...... not worth risking your own personal safety no matter how attached you are to Fido. Be sad .... but don't be dead/injured/crippled.

As a dog owner, I agree, stomp on the brakes and hope to god, the dog gets out of the way or you stop in time, don't swerve to avoid, you could cause damage to yourself. I unfortunately have had to chase my dumbass dogs a few times to get them because they saw a stray cat and zoomed out the front door and went after it. Much cursing went on as I went after them and much yelling at said dog about not leaving the house without me or a leash. But on the flip side I did lose a beloved dog by a malicious driver. My roommate had to watch in horror as a driver of a truck pulling a horse trailer purposely swerved down the road aiming up to our dog that was coming across the road from chasing a stray cat. My roommate was trying to get her back. Instead he watched this guy run her down. Now if it was her running under his wheels all of a sudden etc, understood, it happens, but nope this guy lined up for, now that was cruel.

always run over animals. its your life or theirs...

SCREW THAT!!! sue them for having thier dog in the mddle of the road and endangering your life!

Never swerve to avoid an animal. It is too risky. Just hit the brakes. If you hit the animal, you hit it. It isn't worth damaging a vehicle or risking your life.

No shit. **** the dog, think about your insurance rates. No animal is worth the cost of increased premiums.

Dumb city slickers! You don't put any human life in danger over an animal that has wondered onto the road! If the animal is easy to avoid, then swerve. Otherwise, run it over and get on with your life!
