So close, but yet so far

By socks - This FML is from back in 2011 but it's good stuff - United States

Today, I had to explain to a woman I didn't know that my husband was killed overseas. She replied, "I know exactly how you feel, my dog died last month." FML

I know how she feels, yesterday I couldn't find my shoes.

Some people just don't know what they're saying.

my grandfather died in russia and i say: why the hell did he go there?

Op, my sympathy for losing your husband and fyl for that. However, being compared to a dog is not the worst thing in the world. My dog is like a son to me and a lot of people don't have anyone but their dog and losing the dog would be like losing a husband or something. I'm not saying "suck it up" or anything like that, just trying to explain what she might have meant. Still fyl.

My husband is also in the service, he is in the army and we have made it through two deployments together and I thank God every night he and our marriage has made it through both of them. While he was gone I got a little dog and he is like a son to me also. I don't know what I would do without him, especially when my husband is gone on deployments. And I couldn't imagine losing either one, especially on a base where I don't know anyone yet and my dog is all I got. I understand it made you angry with your situation being compared to hers. I probably would have been too but I don't think she meant any harm hun. I think she was just trying to be sympathetic in the best way she could be at the moment. For all you know he may have kicked herself for that later in the day when she realized what she said.

when people are presented with shocking information, they lose the funnel that controls what comes out. I'm sure she meant no disrespect to you or your husband. I'm sorry for your loss, op.

Nobody can compare to how you feel! Everyone experiences everything differently.

devildoc55-Thank you for serving and taking a beating for our country! My brother is in the Navy, he's an ET1, on board a nuclear submarine. He's currently on deployment and there's not a day that goes by that I don't worry about him. I can't imagine what it would be like if he was killed or hurt even. So again, thank you for serving our country!
