This one almost made me burst into tears. I am so sorry for your loss. Don't worry about what the old lady said, maybe she was just caught off guard and didn't know what to say, and that was just what came out. At least I hope so, because while I understand that people do get attached to pets, it's no comparison to losing someone you love.

I agree with Keev, some people have had their pets longer than some people have had family members. She may not be the most social person (as it would seem by her comparison of husband and dog) and it could well be that her dog was her only good friend and companion for many years... It seems like her sympathy was genuine enough, the only FML here is that everyone/thing seems to be dying...
