So long, grandpa

Today, I took home my grandpa's ashes. I then went out with my grandma, leaving my 5-year-old at home with my 12-year-old. When I got home, my beaming 5-year-old opened the door, covered in white powder. My grandmother asked where all the powder had come from. She pointed to the empty ashbox. FML

Common sense should have been used here: Keep out of reach of children.

That is so awful. Why the hell did you leave something that important where your five-year-old could get at it?? Why was she not informed that this was an absolutely hands-off item? Why was she beaming? There is so much wrong with this. Your poor, poor grandmother. :(

Shit happens. And what the hell is everyone getting so stressy about. It's just ash's of an empty vessel. People put too much into human remains. As long as you keep that person's memory alive in your heart then you don't need no steenking ash's to mourn over.

A lot of people let 13 year olds babysit their kids for a few hours... There are classes for the that sort of thing that people can take younger than 13...I don't see how 12 is that much different.

i took a babysitting class when i was in 6th grade, so probably 11. after that i started babysitting my neighbor, who was 4, and nothing bad ever happened. it really depends on the kid's maturity rather than age. i'm 16 now, and i know a lot of 18 year olds who wouldnt even be capable of babysitting a 5 year old

You can find a lot of those people on this site. Anyone who things your average 12 year old can't take care of a 5 year old doesn't have kids. People used to get married at that age, provided one of their parents had died so they had a place for their spouse to live in the house. Shit happens. It probably wasn't even mostly your grandpop's ashes. They just scoop out a bunch of gunk at the end of the day and give it to you.

Why can't you accept that grandpa just wanted to molest his granddaughter one last time?

YDI for leaving it where a child could reach.

Seconded. I swear that kids are getting more and more stupid as the years progress. Sure, I did a handful of stupid things when I was younger, but nothing that mind-bogglingly moronic.

a good idea would to put the ashes in a place away from where your kids can get into it. and why the hell would you leave your 12 year old in charge of a 5 year old what kind of parent are you?! # 44 your right shit does happen...like to this persons head. thats why i dis like people their so dumb sometimes

I'm pretty sure the age doesn't matter, it's more about the maturity of the older kid. I started babysitting at age 12 and there were never any problems. This is not "neglect" on the mother's behalf, her 12-year-old should have been paying better attention to his/her younger sibling.

"thats why i dis like people their so dumb sometimes" Case and point. Shut your face.

YDI for leaving your stupid 12 year old with an even more stupid 5 year old.

You completely deserve it for leaving two kids at home on their own! I'm pretty sure that constitutes neglect,

Are you reterded? There was a friggin 12 YEAR OLD there. Not some little kid. We're talking about someone old enough to give birth to her OWN kids.

That's gonna be SUCH an awesome story to tell at her graduation! "Do you remember when you were 5 and you rubbed grandpa's dead remains all over yourself? Hahaha. *sigh* Good times..."
