So long, grandpa

By fcnk - 18/06/2009 02:40 - United States

Today, I took home my grandpa's ashes. I then went out with my grandma, leaving my 5-year-old at home with my 12-year-old. When I got home, my beaming 5-year-old opened the door, covered in white powder. My grandmother asked where all the powder had come from. She pointed to the empty ashbox. FML

Common sense should have been used here: Keep out of reach of children.

That is so awful. Why the hell did you leave something that important where your five-year-old could get at it?? Why was she not informed that this was an absolutely hands-off item? Why was she beaming? There is so much wrong with this. Your poor, poor grandmother. :(

I'm really sorry about your grandfather. But seriously, that is so insanely creepy. She is going to be completely weirded out about it when she's all grown up D:

I started babysitting at 11, with a 5 year old. And no kids I babysat ever got into their grandfather's ashes. Blame the kid in question, not the age

It's irreresponsible for a 12 year old to be posting, or even visiting FML. Why are you here, if you think being irresponsible is such a bad thing?

lol. When did 4chan start invading FML?

Your kid will never be able to live this down. Hopefully you swept up what you could and went and threw grandpa over the ocean or something where he could be free.

yeah your grandmother is gonna hate that kid forever. lol

Sorry for your loss. Omg that is just awful.

I was left home alone at 12. 12 isnt exactly infantile.

because it's sooo normal to say, "Bye kids, be good and have fun.... oh and don't play with your dead grandpa's remains!"

No, it's not too young to be left home alone. But it is too young to be responsible for a five year old. Just because the Baby-Sitters Club did it, doesn't make it a good idea.

Most people leave their kids alone with a 12 year old. They are old enough to know where to reach mommy and to make sure the kid is fed.

Totally agree, that's some shitty parenting right there. YDI 2 pre-teens in a house alone? Maybe you should think more next time.

In a fair number of states it is either illegal to leave a child that has not yet reached 13 years of age alone, or legal to leave them home alone, as long as they aren't in charge. We had a case here where a family left a 14 year old babysitting their children (legal as there no minimum age law) but something in the house caught on fire and 1 of the children died. All the children were removed from their home because they had left a 14 year old in charge, and the parents were charged with parental neglect for each case of leaving the children home alone (14 year old was one of the cases of neglect they were charged with)

Its leagal to leave 12 year olds at home alone, they're old enough to be home alone for an hour or to and take care of a 5 year old while they're at it.

That's pretty ridiculous. In large cities, you often see kids about 10 years old out by themselves. So why would they not legally be in the house by themselves?

I babysat my five-year-old sister when I was twelve...

Hell, I was left home when I was 10, maybe even younger. I was a responsible child. It surely depends on the person. -_-

Yeah, but you have to remember that parents these days can't be bothered to toilet-train their kids until they're 4 or 5, so a 12-yr-old has probably just barely mastered eating with utensils and doesn't know how to dial 911. =)

I was left home alone when I was 12 too. Maybe the OP kid's just are reallly immature.

I was left home by myself with my younger siblings when I was 12. Not at night-time, but during the day, sure. We weren't ratbags and we knew not to open the door to strangers, not to tell people on the phone that our parents weren't home, not to jump off furniture, how to get our own lunch out of the fridge, etc. Twelve-year-olds aren't babies.

um, when I was 12 I was sometimes left home with my 10 year old sister, 7 year old brother and 5 year old sister for an hour or so in the afternoon if Mum wanted to go do the groceries and we didn't want to go with her. We all knew the rules about being at home by ourselves and we were fine.

My parents. And all of my friends parents when I was about 12. In my day, 12 years old was when you were old enough to baby-sit.

@#95: And in some states, it's legal for a grown man to marry a 13 year old with parental consent, but that's not the case everywhere, is it? 12 year is old enough to babysit if the kid wasn't raised to be a piece of crap, if the local law allows.

A 5-year-old is not a pre-teen, it's a baby. But still, the 12-year-old should have been able to stop it and know that playing with cremains is sick and wrong.

Sorry but YDI. What kind of asinine person leaves a 12 year old CHILD to baby sit a 5 year old CHILD? Your luck you don’t lose your kids!

#17... What future? He's been turned into ashes....

My mother. That's who. I turned out fine, because not all twelve year olds are as irresponsible as yours. If you don't have kids, stop talking because you're too ignorant to judge anyone else.

Your comment is irrelevant to the fact that a 12 year old is still considered a child. No matter how behaved, should not be made responsible for taking care of a 5 year old as this story unfortunately shows. FYI, I'm a parent too.

I realize this happened a while ago, but I'll still comment. Many parents have their children babysit. I don't see the problem as long a the child is responsible. I watched my brothers at age twelve. None of us are in jail or got taken away. We're actually doing pretty well. Thanks for your ignorance ADULT.

well my sister was 5 years old when I was born, but until age eight she was able to babysit me, ADULT

My sister babysat my brother and me when she was 12. i mean, he was 10 and i was 8... but still. she was responsible and we were all taught what to do in an emergency.

Maybe that's what the old man would've wanted. Shouldn't this be filed under 'kids'?

Bleh! That's sick. On the other hand, ur grandpa's future is on ur 5 year old's hands.

Dumbassss. Why would you leave your grandfathers ashes in the reach of a five year old? YDI

honestly, you leave a 5 year old with a 12 year old, WTF did you expect?
