You care about the money, not the LIFE of an innocent dog?? You should have restraints on your dog if it's not well-behaved; even if it was a complete accident, don't be such a douche about it!

I think the OP is pointing out that the cost of paying for the poor little dog is an added horror to what is a tragedy for all concerned. I don't think s/he is necessarily uncaring about the pain and fear of the smaller dog. The OP now has to think about whether the German Shepherd is going to behave this way in future, and what s/he needs to do about it. The implications go far beyond the cost of the animal that died, but this is FML - Not an essay competition. And yes, I see the irony considering the length of my comment!

Out of curiosity, how does something like that occur? My lab has been around tons of smaller dogs, even big dogs for that matter , and he's never "ate" another dog . Poor pup

Um #69 I've had 3 German shepards and they're an amazing breed. So unless you've owned one you can shove that freak comment up your ass. Shepards are extremely loyal, easily trained and are highly protective of their family. Clearly the whole story wasn't stated, but I'm sure the little rat dog provoked the Shepard in slime way

113, your comment is ridiculous. You harp on one commenter because he was talking bad about your breed of choice, then turn around and talk bad about small dogs. That's ridiculous. How do you expect to convince someone that a German Shepard is a great animal and portrayed wrong by society when you have just crapped on another breed? People are immediately going to ignore what you say and think of it as irrelevant because you are obviously not tolerant of certain breeds yourself.

#69 saying that is like saying all pit bulls are evil and vicious, no matter what breed they can still be sweet loving creatures. It all depends on how you act towards said dog that dictates what they will deem as appropriate behavior.

This needs a follow-up. Was the little dog roaming free and got too close? Did your dog just walk up to the little dog and eat it? A follow-up would answer whether this is an FML or YDI.

This story does indeed need follow-up ... But if something happend to another animal because of the animal that was in my care, I would feel extremely guilty and blame myself for improper ownership. My idea is, if you own an animal you are responsible for it, no matter what the cost is ...
