Holy geez. You'd tell a girl you should break up just coz she missed a date? There are dozens of things that could have happened. She might have been in a car accident, might have been called to some kind of emergency (perhaps one of her family members might have gotten sick or injured), or, as actually happened, SHE could have been in hospital!
