Why are most of these people against the op? Would it be better if she dumps him after a horrible day and make his life more shitty? At least she is helping him you heartless people.
Dear OP, You literally handled this as professionally as possible, and went a fair measure beyond what you're genuinely obligated to do (once the decision to end it was made, even if only on your end and prior to recent events in his life). I feel compelled to cite this to you as a strong testament to your integrity, and I would even bring grace into this- insofar as your compassion in being there for him when he *genuinely* needed support. Unfortunately, no good deed goes unpunished. I would only emphasize being mindful of how long you're willing to feel obligated to the task of easing his burden; it's a tricky tightrope you're walking. Clearly your actions demonstrate your ability and judgement, just... be mindful, and gl. FYL.
could have been like this: today, I got fired and found out I have to move back in with my parents. my bank account is low. I called by girlfriend for cheering up and she dumped me. FML
Duh ... Don't dump him then ... If you care that much ...
there's never a "right time" to break up, shit always happens. fair enough not today, but do it soon n save hurting you both in the long run.
Do it like sex, quick and leave faster
I think it's a nice thing that you didnt dump him after a day like that he prob woulda killed himself!
Well you obviously still care for him enough to not kick him when he is already down.. Why don't you re evaluate why you wanted to dump him, and see if its not something that can be worked on. (unless he cheated, then **** his feelings)

Help him find a job, then when he's back on his feet and doing well, see if you feel the same.
