They think it's all over… it is now

Today, I was refereeing a soccer match and I called a foul. An angry coach kept screaming at me, saying, "You're crazy!" I asked him to leave the field. As he left, he lifted his middle finger and screamed, "FUCK YOU!" I ref 5-year-olds. FML

What a fantastic role model. People need to realize that children pick up these things extremely easily. Set an example for them by behaving like you want them to.

Wow, they learned sportsmanship and vocabulary in one game! Who says sports don't build character?

I ref soccer and that is very common. That coach is more upset at himself for being a failure in life than at you for reffing his game.

Is there a F The Kid's Life button? There needs to be one, that's just unacceptable.

He sounds even worse than the gym teacher we had in grade 6. He would scream and curse and shake his fist at us like a lunatic. And then when I got older he became the vice-principal of our school!

Pee wee is more competitive and violent then pro sports. At least he only cussed you out. I have seen punches thrown over that shit.

you mean with the parents and coaches and refs. the kids aren't as competitive or violent as professionals.

In the Netherlands a guy was actually kicked to death by some teenagers during and because of a situation like this. It's ridiculous.

They're 5-year-olds, how do they even understand how to play soccer? I think when I was five we were playing with rubber bouncy-balls with cartoon characters or polka dots printed on them.

Dude, kids' brains are like sponges. Of course they can know how to play soccer.

I have to agree with #56. I started playing soccer for my local club when I was six, but had been playing soccer with friends since I was 4 and the club I played with had multiple under 4s teams. The rules are fairly easy to learn, enforcement of those rules, however, take comprehension outside the capabilities of most children (I have seen people as young as 12 acting as a referee though, so it comes down to dedication).

The joys of being a ref, eh! I feel your pain, kids at that age pick it up so easily and think of it as a joke. In a few games it's been the kids throwing the f-bombs around and it's not right. I liked it when I could tie their shoelaces and have a fun time, now it's the parents ruining it for the kids. I suggest haven't a word with that guy after the game.

That is an instant red card. The coach would be ejected from the field and an assistant would have to be coach. I know this because I had an Italian coach that almost hit the ref and called him some choice words. He got red carded and calmly walked to his car and left. One of the parents continued coaching. He was actually a great coach but the ref was making bad calls.

I'm not doubting it happened, but soccer referees should never card coaches. Cards are only for players, and coaches are simply asked to leave.

I really hope that guy gets fired from his coaching position. Even in a match with adults that is completely unacceptable. But around children? That is down right ludicrous.

Some people take this kind of thing way too seriously. I remember back when my brother played city league soccer there were a couple coaches that everybody dreaded playing against because they would swear and carry on. If it's possible to report him to some kind of authority, I would. Otherwise just keep your head up. I'm sure the parents thought he was as out of line as you did.

I bet this game was in Highlands Ranch. Am I right? I guess this because I used to volunteer for a summer soccer camp there, and trust me, with how seriously parents there used to take their children's games during camp, I could only imagine how much worse it gets when the parents put them on a actual team with paid coaches...
