Tipping point

Today, I was taking out a customer's groceries when he offered me a $5 tip. I told him I couldn't accept, since it's against store policy, but thanked him anyway. He called me an asshole just as my boss was walking to his car, who then yelled at me for it. FML

This almost exact situation has happened to me before, usually kind old ladies try to give money for helping them to their car but one time a man from the army with a broken leg got pissed because I wouldn't take the money! I ran it by my boss though and now I just accept and donate the money to the charity the store I work in supports!

To take or not to take. The age old dilemma. Always take!

You didn't have to act like Mother Theresa. You should have just taken it.

you can be fired for taking it as it is against store policy. the $5 is not worth losing your job.

OP should have taken it anyways. Nobody would find out

Um, I'm guessing OPs' boss might have noticed. Since the boss noticed OP being called an ass hole on the way to their car, probably would have noticed OP getting a tip, and then would have been fired instead of just getting yelled at. At least this way OP still has their job..

For all those saying he should have just taken it and nobody would have found out, his boss was walking out to his car and could have very well seem him accept the money as could someone else and reported it. I say good call and explain the situation.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Your boss would have probably yelled at you (or even fired you) for accepting the tip.

The store I work for is the same way OP. Most customers just don't understand that we aren't trying to be rude, it's just a policy of our job.

When it doubt, take the money and shut up!

I always thought it was "When in doubt, do the right thing". Have I had it wrong my entire life? Or are you just greedy and immoral?

I thought it was "when in doubt, C4." Could be a bit messy in this situation though.

and why the hell didn't u just take the money. screw the stores's policy as long as no one finds out

That's usually what people say right before someone finds out.

I have the same problem at my work. It's a stupid policy. You're expected to tip a waiter/waitress just because they bring you your drinks and napkins, but I can't accept a tip for breaking my back lifting a 20kg bag of dogfood into someone's trunk.

You are also paid a higher wage to begin with. If you want to be paid under minimum wage and work for tips then you need a different job.

If you can't keep the tip, don't accept the tip. **** store's charity
