Today, a customer had an allergic reaction to the almonds in the sundae I made for her. We're supposed to put the almonds on unless the customer asks otherwise. She complained to my boss that I'd poisoned her. FML

She really should have told you she was allergic to almonds. Didn't she see them in the sundae?

You should know what's in what you're eating. Especially if you have any allergies. That was not on you, OP. You were just doing your job the way you were taught to do it.

Hopefully your boss stuck up for you... Though that's probably as likely as Snickerdoodles coming back to FML.

I'm pretty sure Snickerdoodles will, actually.

OPs screen name is "unemployed", so I'm kinda doubting that his boss was understanding...

What an idiot, everyone knows that there's some type of nuts used in sundaes.

usually people with nut allergies ask anyway, as most kitchens will possibly have something nut based or be exposed to nuts, the woman deserves it

ok here's an idea the nuts were on top so it's the customers fault. even if she didn't know they were normally on it and would have seen them BEFORE she ate it. she deliberately ate it knowing she was allergic.

True. Probably wouldn't prevent her "YOU'RE TRYING TO POISON MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!" rant though. I think its a dumb policy though. Most people assume toppings are extras - for example, I have to ask for whipped cream on my hot chocolate, they don't automatically put it on. Isn't almonds a fairly common allergy?

A lot of small ice cream places have set sundaes with specific toppings as menu items, so if you get a certain sundae it comes with certain ingredients. They also will typically have all the ingredients listed. I know at dairy queen or something you ask for each topping separately, but when I go to a non-chain ice cream place the sundaes typically come with several toppings already determined by the place.

And who doesn't put whipped cream on the hot chocolate? At Tim Hortons you have to ask for it without, it's on it in the picture so it's on yours unless you say otherwise.

I go to Costa. By default, the hot chocolate is full-fat hot chocolate, and you have to ask for whipped cream/swizzle stick/marshmallows/flake etc. Its pretty standard wherever you go. But I'm English, so maybe its different on your side of the pond.

You should know that so many people have nut allergies and should ask if they want almonds or any other nut when taking their order.

Was she blind? or were they in the sundae?

I realize that morally and logically you have nothing to feel bad about here, but I'm not sure about legally. Companies need to put food allergy warnings on even the most obvious products to protect themselves from lawsuits that they'd receive from idiots like the woman in this story...

There might've been warnings and the woman was just too stupid to read

This is like the old bitch and the McCdonalds coffee situation.

Ok. Issue number 1: I'm pretty sure she saw the almonds on top. Unless they were mixed in, which I doubt, she would have noticed the nuts there and wouldn't have eaten them. It's looking like her fault already. Issue number 2: Did she see you preparing the sundae? Because most ice-cream shop I know prepare the products infront of the customers, and she should have seen you throwing the almonds on top of her sundae. Issue number 3: Why didn't she ask what's usually on the ice-cream? You'd think people with food allergies would be a little more vigilant and serious about these things. I think she's just sad and ignorant for not checking what was on the sundae.
