Today, a guy from my school came into my work. I know him but I'd forgotten his name. I didn't want to be rude and ask for his name when he probably expected me to know it, so, thinking I was clever, I said, "How do you spell your name again?" His name is Rob. FML

i've done that so many times lol i work at a certain coffee shop that requires names on cups... and we get a lot of old lady customers that do get offended when i forget their names... oh well

I've done this to a guy named ED! Thank god I was quick enough to say "I meant your last name!" which was actually quite hard to spell.

Usually what I do at such situations is - I talk to him normally, and atlast even if I want to call him or do not I ask his number. I go like " Number ??" (he gives the number) "then I say "Name ??" He tells his name and then I say " ow come on man !" :P It failed many times but works 80%.

You really shouldn't feel like you have to ask people to spell their names. If I don't remember someone, I'm just honest about it. However, most people know the "how do you spell your name again" trick and so I'll bet he knew why you were asking him if his name is so common. 142 - I've heard of this happening to people before... it's a common (real or fictional) occurrence.
