Most guy names are shorter.
I would have said , "Ohh. I thought it was R-A-W-B" Hahaha . Or just said , "The job MAKES me ask your name . ?" Lol
"So, thinking I was clever...." You're not.
#1, spoo, you're sure to come back and post your own FMLs one day. purrtygirl: YDI.
Haha, I've done the same thing. I always do it, and it usually works, because there are 23435 different ways to spell any given name. The last person I used it on was a Valerie. I sort of had to quickly make something up like, "Oh, well, I've seen it V-a-l-y-r-i before, plus like twenty other ways, so..." But yeah... Rob... that's like, one of the few names that there is one spelling for. Even I can't think of anyone, and I do this sort of thing when I make a new character. (Mhielodthai = Melody, anyone?) ^^;
You have to be prepared to improvise! Say something like "Oh, I thought it might be spelled Raub."
Should have followed up with "No, I meant your last name!"...if it ended up being something like "Smith" or "Jones" THEN it would be an fml. [unless you were quick enough to follow THAT up with a giggly "oh my gosh I completely mixed up your last name with another Rob's last name! I'm so scatter brained today!"

I always play the "how old are you?". "I dont believe you", "prove it, show me your license". Flattery makes people blind :)
Meh - I know a Robb or two. You could have made a semi graceful recovery - "Thought so, but my (fake) cousin has an extra 'b' in his".
