Maybe he took what you said as rejection. Maybe you could talk to him about it, and if he tells you he didn't say it out of rejection and he was just being rude (or if that's what you interpret from his answer) then he's not worth your time.

There is nothing more annoying than someone insulting themselves rather than taking a compliment. Next time go with a shy smile and say "thank you! I'd love to go!" Both modest, and you don't chase the guy off

Why didn't you just tell him you were flattered that he asked and yes, you'd love to go to the dance with him? That compliments his taste and is modest. Instead, you drove him away.
