That must have been some damn fine cigarette!
was it because you told him a pointless story too ?
We all have our own addictions but I've always gotten a laugh out of people trying to defend the cigarette, trying to justify doing it is a bit sad....just my opinion.
I get what you're saying. It is sad because cigarette smokers are defending something that harms them. But I also believe this is a false contradiction: they are in fact defending themselves, and it is also sad that they should -- the motivation needed for quitting a bad habit or addiction involves getting your s**t together, which only gets more difficult to accomplish if you're being constantly scolded, even by strangers (who not only feel they have the right to, but also argue that they're trying to help). I'm not saying it should be approved of at all, but, as it is, saying to a smoker they are "such losers" for having become addicted in the first place is not making him any more confident to overcome it. And it is impossible, as we all know, to break any bad habit without confidence and strength. Perhaps empathy might do a lot better than criticism, however well-intentioned it may be. This also applies to many other subjects... (Sorry for the long comment! Here's a potato! -> 0)
