Today, after breaking down in front of my therapist over some really sensitive issues, she decided to also break down. Not about my story but about her own life. I'm not being paid to comfort and console my therapist. FML

OP: ...and my mother didn't hug me enough. Therapist: Me either! *sob* And how does that make me feel? OP: What? Therapist: Shh! I'm about to have a breakthrough! OP: ... Therapist: If only she had hugged me more!! WAAAAAAHHHHH!! OP: I'm leaving. Therapist: That'll be $300.

It only cost me 10 dollars to see my therapist. Yay, insurance. Ha. I win.

Op, if you do not feel comfortable you can always change therapists. Sometimes people have a hard time and that usually means they need to take a leave. I would suggest not paying her for that session as she did not do her job. You could have left and told her you were uncomfortable. I think it was nice that you did console her.

Could she be testing you? To she if you are becoming a caring human again?!

How did you gather that he's not?

"I'm not paid" or "I'm not paying her"...?

Well OP, it's hard to say how much of a breakdown she had or if she just wanted to relate to you, but what I'm thinking is that if you're not comfortable listening to the feelings of your therapist, are you comfortable listening to anyone's?

actually, it was probably a form of transference. while it's not pleasant, it's not abnormal for a therapist to have their own painful memories brought up by a patient's.

A lot of therapists do in fact go to therapists themselves.
