Today, after buying my girlfriend a $700 bracelet for Christmas, I hinted that I wanted a pair of Oakleys. She told me I shouldn't get her anything and that I should expect even less. FML

Unless she works at some high-paying job that allows her to needlessly waste money on over-expensive gifts, YDI for expecting her to shell out hundreds on sun-glasses. Especially if she has bills to pay or other friends or family she plans to purchase gifts for. Her request to you that you not spend too much on her may be an indication that money is tight for her right now, like it is for so many other people.

Just because you can afford to spend $700 on gifts, doesn't mean everyone can. Return the gift, get something for her within a more modest price range and buy yourself the Oakleys. It's the thought that counts, not how much you spend.
