OP here. A few comments: the cashier was a guy, not a girl. I don't know why most of you think that. Also, there were two elderly people waiting in line who were laughing and berating me as some of the commenters here are doing. And I'm a woman from Belgium, not the Netherlands (but FML didn't ask for my country when I posted it). I WAS already out of the store and going home when I noticed it, so I needed to go back into the store, wait for a slow customer to pay while the rest of the cue was wondering why I was standing there like a complete idiot, and then explain to the cashier why I wanted to pay for the bread. By the way, the freshly baked, honestly-payed-for, Italian bun was delicious, after I had cleansed my palate from the disgusting comments I received.

They're just jealous because you're a good person with morals
I wonder if the cashiers boss would appreciate the way you were treated. You should ask next time you shop at that market.
I've done something similar, so don't feel like you're the only one, OP
You know you did the right thing, OP, and that's what counts.
I don't know why you would be made fun of for that. It was a nice thing of you to do. A lot of people would do that.. That I know, anyway.
This makes me happy to know that there are still decent people in this world. I had a similar situation at a local eatery a number of years back, where my sister and I got baked goods for the morning after our meal was done. The eatery forgot to charge us for the baked goods, and I ended up going back to the cashier and paid for the items. The cashier was so grateful that he got a manager, explained the situation, and I only had to pay for one baked good, not both. So, it does pay to be a good person and to return to do the right thing. My sister didn't understand that at the time (she nearly left me there at the eatery!), but that's another story for another time. :)
By the way, it's queue OP, not cue
4,600+ people are lying, cheating slime balls who don't have the integrity or decency to do what OP did. Good on you, OP, I always do the same. And if I were you I would have immediately asked to speak with the manager about his attitude!
that's a rather unfair generalization and you seem like a fairly horrible person with excessively strong, negative opinions
You did the right thing, OP. Getting berated for your actions may not feel good, but it just means you are several steps above them. Feel good about yourself!

Whilst I admit that I wouldn't have gone back myself if it was just a bread roll from a chain store, I don't understand why you're getting shit for doing so. It's pretty depressing that people actually mock you for trying to be nice. Ignore them; you did a good thing.
Don't be sad! At least you tried to do the right thing. Good for you!
