Today, after recently discovering that I need a bone marrow transplant, my girlfriend got tested to see if she could be a donor. When the results came back with a negative match, she blurted out, "Oh thank god." FML

She still got tested. I think she would have gone through with it if she was indeed a match, but anyone (including myself) would be dreading the surgery.

It was a nice gesture that she tested to see if she could, but that wasn't really a proper response, even if she was afraid to go through with the procedure. Good luck finding a doner OP!

Best luck finding a proper match. I understand that your gf was/ is afraid of a painful surgery, but that is no reason to express it in this way. FYL

Well, at least she tested to see if she could help you. However I don't think your relationship will work out in the future OP. Time to find a girl who's not all talk, but is willing to sacrifice.

she did get tested and i have no doubt she had full intentions of going through with it. she is allowed to be grateful not to have to go through with it tho.

It's ok that she doesn't want her bone in you, just as long as she likes your bone in her ;)

As far as I know classical bone marrow donation (with an operation) is not that common anymore. Most of the time cells are taken from the blood, if that´s the case it shouldn´t be that big of a deal.

I'm sorry to hear that, OP. But you can't blame her for not wanting to be a donor, as it is incredibly painful. Like the others, I do really think she cares about you and was just scared. She was probably just overcome with relief and didn't even realize that she said it.

At least she offered, most people wouldn't even offer to get tested to be a match. Her reaction was probably based out of fear. Good luck op. hope you get a donor soon!

When I joined the bone marrow registry, they gave me a pamphlet on what would happen if I was a match for someone. When it comes to harvesting, they said that it is similar to plasma or platelet donation, where they take your blood out and it goes into a machine which spins the blood and separates out the marrow they need. It takes around 8 hours but can be split up over two days. I donate platelets and it is no more painful than whole blood donation. It just takes longer because they need to return the blood. I haven't had to donate bone marrow though so I can't comment on whether the pamphlet was true or not. I wouldn't judge her too harshly, OP. I'm sure it was involuntary and doesn't reflect on her love for you.

from what i understand there is also a version that involves breaking into the thigh bone and harvesting it that way. i imagine it depends what is wrong with the needy party what way they do it.

#47-- it is from the back of the pelvic bone. They extract it with a syringe.

makes me cringe just thinking about it.
