Today, after sending in my passport application for a trip to Paris, I got a letter from the state department saying despite them having my original birth certificate, I don't exist. Upon calling them, I was told that it only proves I'm a citizen, not that I exist. I pay taxes and have a mortgage. FML

OP if it's of any comfort to you, you're not the only one who doesn't exist. Read this in the news today: " A US man declared dead after he disappeared nearly three decades ago cannot now be declared officially alive, though he has returned home and is in good health, a judge has ruled."

Neither. I think it was in michigan. The law states that you have three years after being declared dead to overturn. As it has been longer, legally the judge cannot overturn it. Most judges do ANYWAYS, but that one is exceptionally stupid.

They're not doubting that you LITERALLY exist, they're doubting whether or not you are who you say you are. It's just to prevent fraud. They need other proof of identification.

When I tried to get my permit, I found out my birth certificate was invalid. There was a typo and they notarized that one. They just copied it to amend it. I didn't exist until a few months ago.
