Today, as a veteran blood donor, I made a friend who was donating for the first time- I told her not to be scared and that I've been doing it for six years and that it was a great way to help people. While at the snack area afterwards, I passed out, started convulsing and went into shock. FML

"Today, I went to donate blood for the first time. I figured I'd be fine because I was going with my friend who donates all the time. After he donated, he went into shock and started convulsing. I am never donating blood ever again. FML"

i can't donate blood :( sucks being gay... in more than one way too

Just because your gay doesn't mean you can't donate blood

Tehalon = huge douche. And #21, I remember when I filled out my first blood donation form and there were all the questions about "are you a man whose had sex with a man EVEN ONCE." and thinking, wow totally bites for healthy gay guys who want to donate...

woah, that can happen? #21 and 22: I totally agree.. It sucks for healthy gay guys.. I just looked it up, and it's a federal law, not a Red Cross policy. Also, the Red Cross is petitioning to allow homosexuals to donate, based on recent studies regarding the relative safety of their blood.

WTF?! whats the difference between a gay guys blood and a straight guys blood, last time i checked it was still red and still gushed out of ppl when they cut themselves regardless of their sexuality

Uh, HIV/AIDS? That's what the law is about, anyway. They used to think it was only a "gay man's disease".

You ought to be like, "Ah-ha, just playing with ya!"

I was in the exact same situation, the only difference was that i was in the process of giving the blood. lmao

#8... I volunteer daily with the red cross and regularly donate despite my own intense fear of needles...it is a rare thing for someone to pass out and even more rare (never have seen it happen!) to go into shock. don't let one person's not so great experience influence your decision to donate blood. that would be like not going on a roller coaster because you saw a friend get off and puke. give it a chance! to the OP, I hope your friend still had a decent experience and that you are feeling back to normal by now thank you for donating =]

It's called VasoVagal Syncope, and it's actually very common. The reason you don't normally see it in blood clinics is because the people who KNOW they are prone to it, simply don't donate blood, or they inform the nurses before the procedure so they can be ready, etc. It's NOT "rare".
