A lot of the people I know check and answer texts on reflex. So yeah, it's stupid, but she probably didn't think about it being mean to you. I suggest--for any relationship you're in, current and future--talking about leaving phones off during dates and such unless one of you is expecting a really important phone call, e.g. Grandma's in the hospital and may be dying, sister is expecting a baby any hour now, etc. It's important to talk about these things that bug you since otherwise it may not occur to your relationship partner that you don't like that sort of thing.
