Today, at a big family dinner, my dad said, "Pfff, gays don't have it hard at all. The things a guy has to do for sex with a girl? Crazy. All a gay guy has to do for sex is become an altar boy!" My husband's side of the family is very religious, and all hell quickly broke loose. FML

I'm sorry but I didn't understand the joke. >.

Can somebody please explain what her father was trying to say because I'm a bit confused?

In the Catholic church it is a common stereotype because there have been a lot of reports of the alter boys being molested by their superiors in the church, the superiors being the priests and stuff. Not really a comment to make at a dinner with people you aren't familiar with as it is offensive to those of that religion.

Not just that, it's offensive to people who are actually gay and aren't just pedophiles.

as much as it wasn't a great topic to pick in front of them, theres no need to lose your shit all it proves is that he's probably right

All it proves is that he's disrespectful. There's no reason to bring that up at a family dinner

Try not to "overreact" when someone insults your religion, if you're extremely religious. Or your whole sexual orientation if you've already suffered irrational discrimination and prejudice because of it. Actually, try to find something in the entire FML that ISN'T an extremely offensive reason to "overreact". I'm with OP on this, FYL.

#19 if you can't have discussions like this with family, who do you think this should be discussed with? I know alot of people that wouldn't get my humor so I save it for my family cuz I know they will understand it and not overreact when I do say it.

im both religious and gay, and i didnt find that comment insulting at all. Your dad just has a different kind of humor and thats fine. its actually kinda funny when you word it the way he did. i would have chuckled a bit had i been there x)

I agree with 21, with how he worded it, it was probably pretty funny. But I also agree with 25 and that it's something that should be said with close friends when you already know how they'll respond. There are certain issues that should never be joked, or debated about, in front of people you hardly know. With that said, I don't think the in laws should be retaliating so quickly either (it's probably what the dad wanted in the first place) and it's not worth arguing or trying to prove your point. People like the dad most likely won't change and there's no sense in the in laws getting their backs up and trying to let him know it's inappropriate; they're just wasting their breath and energy. It's best to just ignore those types in those situations, let the awkward silence do the talking.

sure, there are somethings you should be cautious about when joking. but in this case they're practically family. I just dont see the reason for why "all hell broke loose" sometimes people need to find at least a little humor in these type of situations. Im sure her father didnt mean it in a discriminatory way. We all have that one relative who always says the wrong things at the wrong time, laugh a bit and move on. Getting butthurt and angry at something like this only prolongs the situation

If that's the case, it's time I became religious!

Oh no... My family are mostly atheist and my husbands is very baptist. It has caused some nasty words to fly unfortunately because some people just love to poke the bear.

Exactly. Some people just do this for the reaction and the argument that follows, so why bother giving it to them. It would've been much better if the in laws just said something like "maybe we could discuss..." (bringing up any other reasonable topic) and ignored it.

That's it.. Daddy is no longer invited
