Today, at the funeral home where I work, I asked my boss if it was time to "bring out the stiff". I didn't realize the guy's family was not only in the building, but within earshot as well. FML

You deserve it for not watching your surroundings or saying it in a more polite manner.

Haven't you ever been taught to act profesional in your work area? YDI

I hope you at least dressed the stiffy with something spiffy.

You totally deserve it. You dont say shit like that at work, and you especially dont say shit like that at your job when family is/could be around. I work with people who cannot keep their mouth shut with customers - Ive had customers repeat stuff thats been said - its so fustrating and so unprofessional. Drives me completely batshit.

I get that this kind of gallows (haha...) humor can come up a lot in fields like this, but you should really watch where you say stuff like this. Whether or not it was the deceased's family, if ANY visitors might be in earshot, you shouldn't say it.

Today, someone working at a funeral home called my father's dead body a stiff. FML

I've always thought it was very special people who work in funeral homes, nothing but the utmost of respect and dignity being upheld. Helping you every step of the way(my first time dealing myself and I was not sure about all that had to be filled/taken care of) Sad to see the dark side of it now. I truly hope it isn't like this in every funeral home....

It is usually. Most of them just don't do it in front of customers. Personally I'd be okay with them joking, just not if I were around.

There is normally some joking in environments like this but normally not at the expense of the deceased. When you work at places like that they expect you to be respectful to the deceased and to be mature enough not to joke about them.

OP deserved it because they weren't more cautious about their surroundings. To make jokes and comments like that are fine, just not in front of any customers. That field of work can be stressful and bring you down.. people have their own ways of coping with it. Don't be so uptight

WTF are you thinking? Put yourself in their shoes and you heard some F -ing idiot say that about your loved one that recently passed.

you're a tool... plain and simple... making that kind of remark...in that environment... surrounded by people who are emotionally struggling.... kinda shocked you weren't fired...
