Today, at the funeral home where I work, I asked my boss if it was time to "bring out the stiff". I didn't realize the guy's family was not only in the building, but within earshot as well. FML

You deserve it for not watching your surroundings or saying it in a more polite manner.

Haven't you ever been taught to act profesional in your work area? YDI

When I was an intern for an IT service company I had to visit a funeral home once because they had some computer issues. I was surprised how they spoke of the dead there, almost as if they weren't people anymore. But I guess you kinda have to forget about the humanity in a job like that or else you'll fall apart after a while... But YDI for not being aware of your surroundings...

If i were in their shoes i wouldn't mind. To work with dead bodies you ought to have a strong stomach an some weird sense of humor. Being around corpses you have to crack a joke from time to time and this is not disrespectful.

have some respect for the dead, you prick.

Omg I love how people sit here and judge! She probably has to joke to keep from being depressed all the time. Everybody is quick to judge instead of stepping back and being like yea that would be one tough job. I'm sure she was ashamed when she found out the family heard it. She doesn't need you people on here trying to shame her more.

If you can't behave and talk like a decent person at work, you should go a sit in a cubicle somewhere!

Its funny that you guys fail to realize that the job involves being around dead people daily, a little humor really helps you from getting depressed and stressed. I mean put yourself in his shoes, having to tend to the dead and seeing families time after time show you their grievances can be emotionally draining. Im sure the dude meant no offense to the family. .

I bet your foot was so far in your mouth that you were tasting your knee. I don't feel sorry for you, OP. You're lucky you weren't fired.

Dead people can't be offended so as long as you make sure you're not within earshot of family I don't see the problem. As much death as I've seen it doesn't phase me so I would probably laugh / say something like this. Apologize and move on
