Today, at work, a homeless woman called me trash, threw her coffee at me, and told me to get a job. I do have a job. It's homeless outreach. FML

Maybe it's just an issue of pride. She probably doesn't want your help or, as she may think of it, your pity.

I know ppl like that. some homeless go crazy and lose a sense of humanity from being n da streets for so long and barely speaking to ppl all day. don't take it personally

Actually moetero, most homeless people do not "go crazy" from living on the streets, there is usually an underlining mental health concern long before they become homeless.

that sucks well you do live in new york. I'm sure the people there are very rude.

I work in a shelter for homeless and/or abuse women and their children. I can sympathize that it isn't an easy clientele to work with, but you have to factor in life circumstances to understand actions. Mental health is a huge contributing factor chronic homelessness, and the client in your FML probably has (un)diagnosed mental health. You have a job, which probably means you have a safe place of living. Your life is not an FML, if anything the homeless woman's is, especially with the negative and often inaccurate perspectives people have towards the homeless.

I feel you OP. Mostly he or she didn't realized you're helping them like everyone who does, is to makes sure they get help they needs. Food in their stomaches, clothes on the back, blanket to keep warm, they should appreciate what given to them, or else, they starved and freeze to death. What's even sadder is that homeless have children with them, due to loss of job, home, and no where to go or get help. What's worst, I know a couples on verge of homeless, they both diabetics and have no money to pay for medicine, not even a welfare help them because "they make too much", the house mortgage cost more than their unemployment incomes they're getting.

This is why I prefer Canada. I'm diabetic and I do have to pay for my own medications since I don't have insurance, but I can get assistance from a number of medical programs that allow me access to free insulin. I get free glucometers and insulin pens from the Diabetes Education Centre. I end up in the hospital a fair bit due to diabetic seizures, which is another reason why Canada rocks. It doesn't cost me anything. I had a seizure in the States once and the paramedics refused to take me to the hospital. I had even bought medical insurance for the trip but since I didn't call the insurance company and get an ambulance approved (which would have been amazing since I was unconscious) they told me to just "walk it off".

Gosh #28 Canada must be paradise, free meds, free hospital care...wow. Must be great for eveyrone but the poor taxpayers.

gosh #72 did it occur to you that the taxpayers are the ones paying for AND using the health care system?

how the **** does she afford coffee to throw at you? |the kid|

All that matters is that you understand the good you are doing for these people, the opinion/actions of a homeless person should be taken with a grain of salt. Either that or get a career so you don't have to deal with that rubbish anymore.
