Sorry but they shouldn't of given the lady a discount. OP should've paid for it out of their own pocket because your boss wouldn't have grounds to fire you then
It's a business, if you're short then get out of line or order something less expensive. It's not being cruel to ask the customer to have the proper funds. If its short a few cents then let it slide otherwise unless you own it keep it professional. During my cashier stints I was stoic and too the point and over time I heard fewer sob stories. If you're going on a guilt trip I'm staying at home.
What did you expect? Don't get me wrong, it's nice what you did, but you can't expect everyone else to not want the same treatment.
Good job being sympathetic. The others didn't need a discount, they are just selfish people. A good thing to rememper as a customer is "Appreciate good customer service, but don't demand it. You do not own the world, and you are not entitled to anything, so enjoy what good you do get".
Welcome to the concept of 'equality'. It applies universally, not according to your whims.
If something like that happens again, apologize and tell them that it was your employee meal for the day, and when you go on lunch, you will now be paying full price as well.

You get points for being a decent human being. Those people are just petty and greedy. Don't stop being nice, OP.
Should've said to the other people "life isn't fair, deal with it" and moved on. . But props for being a good person!
