Today, at work I was trying to be nice and give a customer a discount because she was having trouble finding money to pay for her food. Everybody behind her then demanded a discount as well. FML

You get points for being a decent human being. Those people are just petty and greedy. Don't stop being nice, OP.

Should've said to the other people "life isn't fair, deal with it" and moved on. . But props for being a good person!

You should've just added a discount on the screen and not have told her. If you do something special to someone with others around always expect the others to want the same treatment

They are just jealous, It also happens in my country. Only here it's large scale we do the same in education scholarships, poverty subsidy, election freebies etc. It's nice of you though.

That's why you saying nothing out loud.

Why did you make such a big deal of the discount that everyone else heard about it? You shamed the poor woman who needed the help. YDI for doing the Aaron Rodgers Discount Double-Check Dance.

Should have said she was an employee and got an employee discount

Working in retail, as a manager I wouldn't fire someone for giving a discount. Aslong as its not a giveaway it's fine.

The people making the comments about "it's losing you money and blah blah blah..." Have never worked in a retail cashier position.

Ladygore-that is a completely untrue statement. I work as a retail manager and doing this in my store will get you fired. I have been in attendance at several meetings where this happened. While many places allow for such discounts-including my store, this can often need to be manager approved. Please don't assume every business is like the one you work at.

Unfortunately, I kind of have to say YDI. You can't give discounts to anyone just because you're a nice person (although karma will give you brownie points for trying). That sounds really mean and insensitive, but that's how it is sometimes. Giving discounts to someone to be generous is very nice, but it costs the business money and the sales records would be off because of it. And now, those customers that felt ripped off may not come again and will tell people about it (most likely exaggerating details and not mentioning they didn't really need a discount). If this happens again, find a way to discreetly pay for it yourself.

I'm sorry but u don't have the special card she has soooo go f*** yourselves

You did an awesome thing. Well done and the customer will remember that and probably be a faithful customer when times are better for her. I was once at a grocery store picking up dinner and I realized I forgot my cash at home and my deposit hadn't cleared yet. The manager just let me take the food and said that if I thought of it, I could pay for it the next time I came in. I did repay it and I shop there all the time now. For your own sake, next time tell the next customers that you'd fibbed for the sake of the lady's pride and there was no discount and you'll make up the difference from your own pocket at the end of your shift. That'll shut them up.
