Today, for my birthday, the only "gift" my parents gave me was the gift of choice: I got to choose which one of them I'll be living with after their upcoming divorce. This was the first time I'd heard anything about a divorce. FML

Things like this are never easy... Keep your head up!

That doesn't seem fair at all! Sorry op. they should have warned you and gave you time. But to tell you on your birthday was not the best choice.

Well you certainly received a surprise this year, and a lot more (or less) than you asked for!

That's clever of them on how they told you about their divorce. But they probably should have told you a better way. I'm sorry that your birthday wasnt all too happy.

Which one will give you better stuff? There's your choice. The loser will try to change your mind by giving you other stuff, so use this time wisely to score lots of swag. Hey, you are losing the illusion of living in a loving two-parent home, so you might as well try to make up for it with material possessions.

It's not bad. It's for the best... According to my parents

Sometimes, it actually is for the best. I'm so happy that my parents are divorced. I'm sorry this happened on your birthday, OP.

I've been in the same situation, but what a bombshell to ask you on your birthday. Things will get better.

Well... Do you at least know who you're going with?

Happy birthday! That really sucks. At least they're offering you a choice. On their birthdays tell them you're giving them the choice between two shitty nursing homes.

That is absolutely terrible. No parent should EVER tell their child about their divorce during an event that is special to the child. It makes me furious.
