You could have turned it into a play with a message. Scenario: you being absent-minded, Santa the victim, and he would tell you to be more careful, then you agree to be more careful, and possibly end the play with a hug.

Or the parents should just tell their kids that Santa isn't real at the very beginning. I don't get why ppl make their kids believe in something for a decade or so, then shatter their beliefs like nothing, now that's evil.
