Today, I applied for a job in an Italian restaurant. Ideally I wanted to be a hostess rather than a waitress, and I told the manager as much. His response? "No no no. Hostess no good for you. We leave that to the pretty girls." FML

Anyone who makes that kind of comment, 43, has to be uglier than anyone they're commenting on. Go **** yourself. I don't know why people are getting so upset about this. It's just good business skills. Think about it. Your hostess is at the front door, the first thing people see when they walk in. You want her to make a good impression on people. Pretty, bubbly, smiling, friendly, well put together. Many people walk into restaurants not sure if they want to eat there, and a good hostess can make them stay :)

I think it's more the phrasing than the business practice. He could have said it in a way that didn't imply she was unattractive.
