YDI for talking to your friend for 5 hours. Sure it sucks your dad didn't tell you, but why talk to them for so long if you were planning on visiting them?

2 things here - 1) Get "Skype", no costs. Better to have a webcam for full usage, but worst case it's a free phone call. 2) Work out you call costs for the 5 hours under your old plan, compare to the actual billing you got, and see if Dad is prepared to meet you half-way (of course, he'll open up a whole new area of 'costs' in the household - but at least you're showing him that you weren't just recklessly calling for 5 hours without an abilitry to pay for it).

Skype isn't as awesome if either party doesn't have a great Internet connection, and unless you have a Skype phone and not just a PC headset you can't lie down or wander around the house or anything very easily in the 5 hours they're on the phone. I've broken 8 or 9 hours before when talking to people who were long distance from me. And IM and email
