Today, I discovered that my boss listens to the things we say about him on the audio-enabled cameras at our work. I'm thus currently jobless. FML

OP, didn't they teach you that in job 101? You wait until you leave the premises to say anything negative about the place and don't bitch about your work to your coworkers because even if your boss didn't have a camera one of them could still tell him about the conversation. While I feel sorry for you, I still have to say YDI.

Never Bitch about your Workplace "AT" your workplace.

In thine own experience, thy words of true power hath not marred the sun of impoverished opportunity and whilst the words be typed on the papyrus, thine own destruction hast been set. Thus, thy fate is sealed in thou mercy. Amen.

On one hand, YDI for badmouthing people, which is never nice. On the other hand, FYL, cause who DOESN'T badmouth their boss?

If all the power is in the hands of the employer (as in this case) it's ridiculous an employer is allowed to spy on people. It makes employees little better than slaves. But hey, at least it's not socialism...

Call a lawyer. Audio surveillance in the work place in the US is illegal.

indeed. we installed cameras at work last year and were specifically told that cameras with audio capability were illegal...

It's kind of a double-edged sword. One one hand, it SHOULD be illegal because it's pretty much spying on your employees. On the other hand, I got ******* REAMED at work the other day because my boss watched the tapes and said that I didn't acknowledge a customer for six minutes, even though I was chatting with them the whole time, which you can't tell from the video. I almost lost my ******* job because of it, which is bullshit and incredibly absurd.

But if there would have been no video in the first place you wouldn't have been in trouble. I think it's ok to have surveillance video. In civilised countries however that video is only used when there is a theft or a robbery. Any other uses are illegal.

thats called wiretapping it is highly illegal call a lawyer

No, it's called "having a camera with audio capability". Wiretapping is installing audio-only devices into telephone lines, telephone sets, or telegraph lines. Still illegal, but with different charges and a different possible outcome in a lawsuit.

You can collect $100 for every day that you worked there, plus attorney and other costs. http://www.laborlawtalk.com/showthread.php?t=203315

Technology is your red-headed **** here. Cameras with sound enhanced capature device??? WTF is this world coming to? What happened to the grainy, black and white, stop motion cameras we're all used to?
