Dropping a class doesn't make you look better than you are. What if you take the same class a quarter/semester later and get an A? Are you still not good enough to pass the class? Potential employers want to see that you can understand and apply the things they are hiring you to do. If you take a class one time, drop it, and then the second time do well, the employers will see that you understand the subject of that class, even if it took two tries. Going through things for a second time can make a huge difference.
Thats just stupid! Never drop anything untill your 100% sure you are failing. YDI
Two years ago, I was in the same situation. I was prepared to drop a class because I thought I totally tanked the midterm. I seriously thought I got maybe a 20 or 30. I had it all planned out as to what I was going to do, and when. However, I didn't act until I saw my test for sure. I actually ended up with a 70, and stayed in the class. I can't tell you how many times I thought I did horrible on an exam, and wound up not doing so bad. It has also happened the other way - thinking I did amazing, but ending up with a not so amazing score.
You couldn't take it Pass/No Pass? Was this decision at the last minute? I sympathize on the level that I, too, "cheated myself out of a good grade" because I feared that I'd screwed up the midterm and was looking out for my GPA (I got an 88), but I switched to P/NP in the last 12 minutes (ay!) of Sixth Week, the last time you can change grading detail without marring your transcript. But the prof didn't have the grades ready 'til the following Tuesday. Like you, I sorta shot myself in the foot. However, I needed to make a fast decision, whereas it seemed you still had some time. I'll agree with an FML, but -- geez, pal -- think it over. I hope this wasn't for your major.
well, that was dumb.
you couldnt wait an hour??? YDI dumbass
It's better to drop a class than getting an F. If you drop the class, your GPA won't be affected (at least that is how it works at my college). However, the OP totally deserves it because he could have made an appointment with his teacher to see if he would be able to pass the class even if he failed that test.
is it just me or my ipod or is the catagory this is in love?
midterm grade? isnt it too late to drop the class by then?

You really need to check first before you do something like that. That's 101% your fault, Y completely DI.
How is this in the love category? Also YDI.
