Today, I figured out my 1-year-old daughter likes to dip her hand in our dogs' water bowl, and rub the water on her face. So I put the water bowl out of reach. She then figured out how to open the bathroom door and use the toilet instead. FML

Put the dog water back that is better then toilet water. When no doesn't work you got to pick the least of two evil..

If she is smart enough to figure that stuff out then you need to explain to her why it's dirty and wht she shouldn't do it. Nurture her intelligence. Don't ignore it...

How do you explain something to a one-year-old?

If she's smart enough to find these.things out? I'm sure she'd be able to understand what "Toilet? No. Doggy bowl? No" would mean.

heres the thing. yes she is very smart. and yes she knows what no means. but do you honeslty think a smart baby will listen all the time? or just sneak into the bloody bathroom like she did

I hope you're not conserving water with the motto "if it's yellow, let it mellow." Otherwise, the water is the toilet is the same as what we drink. It's gross to think about but not dangerous.

if you don't clean it on a regular basis, yes it can be. Shit goes in, the bowl gets infected with tons of bacteria, and the new water that comes in after flushing in turn gets infected. Hopefully you havn't taken a drink out of your own toilet already...

Oddly enough, a drinking glass is also not safe to drink from "if you don't clean it on a regular basis."

i'd be more worried about the bleach in the water than bacteria.

One does not simply reason with a 1 year old.

One should if their one year old is drinking out of the toilet

she must be a happy baby when you give her, her daily baths

Your daughter seems pretty smart, only learns how to do things when she wants to.

Buy a small bowl -- a finger bowl, if you can get one that specific -- and train the dogs not to drink out of that. Try showing her that she can use that one, not the dog bowl or the toilet. If possible, put it somewhere she can get to it but the dogs can't. She may get bored of doing it in a while. A habit of wanting the feel of water on her face by itself wouldn't seem like a terribly distressing behavior unless it becomes messy. Perhaps she'd like swimming lessons. Alternatively, maybe teaching her how to wash her face by herself normally with a toddler-safe soap would be fun for the two of you.

That probably wouldn't deter a 1yo, it'd just get nasty.

Just put a water bucket in her reach.. Filled with clean water.she will play for some time and eventually get bored of it soon..

Toddlers have drowned in toilets, might want to keep yours away from it for more that just the fact that it's gross.
