And what makes you think that the OP is a brat? I, for one, have a father that is always quick to escalate any discussion that involves opinions contrary to his own. And though I can be a bitch when the time arises, I prefer calm discussion to an argument any day. So, I have to disagree with your "insightful" commentary on the quality of person that the OP is; we simply don't know.

It's probably because the OP is now considering the fact that their dad may have more issues than originally suspected. But like someone above said, most of the techniques involved in pacifying a mental patient are all of the same techniques that anyone can use in any situation that is on the verge of escalation.
