Today, I finished the first month of a diet and exercise program designed to help me lose weight. To keep myself motivated, I have avoided the scale the entire time. I weighed myself today. I've gained 6 pounds. FML

Muscle weighs more than fat. If you are excersizing and building muscle mass. That's why

I'd recommend taking measurements instead, at least for a bit. Depending on how active or inactive you were prior to starting your diet/workout routine, it could easily be that the majority of the weight you've gained is muscle, as many of the others have suggested. Until you reach a point of normalcy (in terms of a more constant weight), measurements will give you the motivation you need as well as show evidence of change and success. :)

It could be either you gained more muscle or/and you have water retention.

Diets don't work. You need balanced meals. Those diets that cut carbs or cut protein are false. And diet is another word for what you eat. So saying you're on a diet is redundant as you already eat. Just eat balanced meals and exercise regularly and the muscle should take over the fat.

OK, sweety, here's my diet that worked for me! (Lost 40 lbs) First, you WILL BE HUNGRY! Two fat free yogurts for breakfast, and a Lean Cuisine (or similar) for lunch and dinner. Just the lunch size, around 300 calories. Drink a gallon of WATER a day. No alcohol. Take a potassium supplement and a vitamin every day, to counteract all the water. This is my adaptation of a medical diet plan that would have cost me $3,000, worked just as well. Weigh yourself on Saturday morning to keep up morale over the weekend! Never let your friends talk you into cheating....This will work .

Don't follow this, it's dumb. You will gain all this weight back when you go back to eating like a normal person. 2 yogurts, 2 lean cuisines, you're at like 800 calories a day with little to no carbs for energy. You will feel like shit and it is impossible to follow this into forever. You need to exercise and if you're not sore the next day, you're doing much too light weights. Eat at a calorie-deficit, but eat like a normal human being...normal serving of veggies and meats. Fat in your diet is okay, but not from a f'n Large Pizza...a lightly marbled steak with some asparagus is better...

I agree with all you said, except the lean cuisine. You should NEVER eat processed foods if you want to loose weight and become healthy. They are full of chemicals, salt and sugars. Much smarter to buy fresh vegies and prepare them yourself. Very quick and simple. There are many healthy recipes available on the web.

Better yet some asparagus with a side of steak, if you must eat meat. More veggies, less meat. Do like Japan and use meat for flavor, not as the center of the dish.

Vegetarians are not healthy, you need protein in your diet. If you want to stay away from red meat due to cholesterol issues or the fat intake, eat chicken, or better yet fish. But protein should be a staple of your diet and veggies a second. Grains should not be consumed if it can be helped.

220 You don't know a thing about food if you think humans rely solely on meat for protein. There are plenty of vegan options full of protein, and if you're just a vegetarian, you still have dairy products and eggs. Any diet requires knowledge about what you're eating.

The "muscle weighs more than fat" logic is nothing more than an excuse people use to make themselves feel better about not eating right or taking it easy on exercise. If you are over-weight then you need to lose weight, period! If you are over-weight and you start eating balanced healthy meals and start a decent exercise program, then you will lose weight. Talk to any credible CSCS and we'll all tell you the same thing. Sorry OP, but if you are over-weight then you need to check the scale at least once a week and tweak your eating habits/exercise regiment accordingly. Ps- strict "diets" never work, just try to make everyday healthy choices.

A 200lb bodybuilder is "technically" overweight but it's all muscle. They're healthy and definitely don't need to lose weight so your logic isn't always right.

I seriously doubt the op is a body builder

Eat smaller portions of healthy foods several times a day. Or three square meals a day at the same times each day. You're metabolism will eventually speed up. Keep up exercise. Don't give up! And don't ever stop.

Everyone keeps saying Muscle weights more than Fat but if she weighs 6 pounds more then she did a month ago she had to gain 6 pounds of muscle and not lose ANY fat (which makes no sense) or gain more than 6 pounds of muscle to make up for the fat she's lost (not possible in a month). Sorry OP. Your intake is greater than your output, that's why you're fatter.

Anorexia hun, I stopped eating breakfast and lunch, it's only been a week and I've lost more than 4 pounds :p If not, go see a doc about that.

Until you start eating again and then you'll gain twice as much back.

Yes, a full out 100% retarded diet is the key...OP, you should listen to this

ShroomsOnAcid 16

I could make a mean comment here but I'm not going to. Set your head straight little girl. Anorexia isn't glamorous. A friend of mine suffered from it and couldn't sleep at night from pressure sores caused by her bones poking out. Terrible stuff.

Ok guys I'm still eating some, it's no like I full on just stopped eating, I still have dinner I have milk in the mornings an throughout the day I have juice. I'm also exercising quite a bit to gain muscle.

ibitehard 9

109, I get that, I know this isn't glamorous or to healthy for me, I definitely do know about the risks.

ShroomsOnAcid 16

You know you can't gain muscle if you're not eating enough, right? All that weight is gonna come back when you start eating normally, because you're not gonna keep this up forever. Focus instead on eating right and healthy and weight loss will come. Besides, youve got a lot of growing ahead of you, it's normal to not be a twig at your stage.

ReynshineCutting 10

You can't build muscle if you don't had the nutrients. You're an idiot. You're actually destroying your muscle with what you're doing and killing your metabolism. Good job!

ibitehard 9

188, thank you for repeating what 173 said, you're so cool now. 173, I've started eating again, which was much more difficult than I thought it would be, anorexia does mess with your mind, after every meal I eat, I can't shake the feeling of me being a fat ass, luckily I have friends who found out and are helping me. Also: to everyone saying I'm an idiot and I'm stupid, be in my shoes and go through what I have gone and if you still believe me to be stupid, then you can say it.

ibitehard 9

I am in no way trying to be a "twig" its unrealistic, especially in my family, but being closer to the average weight for my height and age is something I would love, I'll just workout more than.

That's probably all muscle and u probably look thinner anyways
