Today, I found out what it's like to drive seven hours home with a woman who just brutally rejected your marriage proposal. FML

She isn't automatically wrong for rejecting it, oddly enough. And it's hard to trust the assessment of brutal from somebody who got turned down. Maybe he asked in a big public display and she had to either turn him down then, or say yes then tell him "actually, no" later on. Either would feel rough. Plus they may still be together, it's not always all or nothing.

yikes be you wish you picked up that hitch hiker now

I thought its a custom to leave the woman right there after the rejection...

Sorry op maybe she's just not ready yet maybe try again later with her.

Poor Lad. The thoughts running thru your head ugh.

Wow, sorry. Any sort of rejection sucks.

This is going to need a follow up for sure

If u want to propose next time pick a closer place

Maybe you should have considered the possibility of an awkward 7-hour ride back if she said no to your proposal? Also it's not the girlfriend's fault, and she has every right to say no, no matter how much time or effort or money he put in to this proposal! She doesn't owe him a damn thing, including a "yes." It seems kind of obvious that she didn't ASK for this, otherwise she would've said yes to him. It's very possible he just sprang this on her with no prior talkings of engagement. You really, really need to be sure that the person you're proposing to might want to get married. I made damn sure my girlfriend/fiancée wanted to!
