Today, I left the sliding glass door to our townhouse open because it was such a beautiful day. Our new puppy, whom we have been potty training, peed in the yard and I praised him relentlessly. He then walked inside the house, pooped on the carpet, and ran back outside. FML

I disagree with the people who say that you should punish the dog for pooping in the house. The dog will NOT learn from this. Yes, it will look ashamed, but that's because you're yelling at it. Dogs don't have that good of a memory. The best potty training method for my three dogs has been IMMEDIATE rewards for going potty outside, NOT punishment. I'm sad to say that we started off by scolding the dogs, but it didn't work and we quickly got rid of that method. So, OP, good job on praising the puppy for doing well outside! Sounds like s/he is almost there!

At least poop is easy to pick up. Pee can stain the carpet etc.

My pup used to do that. Pick up the poop and take it outside to the "pooping" area. Dump it out there and show the dog that it's there, while saying "Outside" firmly. Don't rub his nose in it though; that's bad for them. He'll learn [:
