You never took them for a ride? Well, at least you learn something :D ... to always buy air freshener for long trips. Good luck OP, Open the windows.
And to always do small test drives with an animal before a long trip. Though, wouldn't trips to the vets have given indication to these problems.
The driving to the clinic...
I've learned the hard way that a trip to the vet isn't always a good indicator. My cats are completely fine on the way to the vet. It's when the trip lasts longer than around 20 minutes that we start having issues. One of them starts screaming at me around that time and doesn't stop until he goes to sleep. If I forget he's there and start singing with the radio he wakes up and I have to hear it for another 45 minutes at least. And that's after I learned to put him in the seat where he can't see me... The other one stress drools (like a river- there's an actual puddle in the floor of his cage that I have to pull over and clean periodically), and one time we got stuck behind a wreck and a 6 hour drive turned into 8. That was the day I learned exactly how long he can hold his bladder (about 7 hours). He's also had carsickness, but not every time thankfully. I just hope the OP has a few plastic bags and a roll of paper towels.
#107 it is very common when you research taking long driving trips with cats, it is suggested to have them be medicated to have them sleep for the ride. it will keep them quite and not have anxiety. I did some research when I was planning on moving from Ontario to New Brunswick but thankfully I didn't have to.
Be glad its only farts....for now.

Show it anywayI live in Australia. It's generally hot, and when it rains it rains for ages. It's the best goddamn country in the world.
There's more to Washington than rain. The eastern half of the state is NOT rainy.
Washington is not full of really bad art. People see beauty and greatness in different ways than others.
nothing like a long road trip with the sweet smell of cat puke and gas.
Edit: How the heck did this get here?
#41 It's Welshite.
you didn't put them in a cage?
Crates still have holes. Chances are OP will still be able to smell it.
The poor things! They aren't feline very well.
