Today, I met someone really cool and their departing words were, for some odd reason, "We should totally be friends, I mean unless you're schizophrenic or something, haha!" I have schizophrenia. FML

People are so ignorant about mental disorders. They assume that if you have DID, schizophrenia, bi-polar, etc. that you're automatically "Crazy." Sorry to hear that OP. I concur with the odd departing words as well. Who says that? lol

I'm sure he's just making a failed attempt at a joke

Are you sure they were not a delusion? Also, what form of schizophrenia do you have? This could be a paranoid delusion. It sounds like something that your subconscious might tell you especially if you are going through a period of stress where it is becoming hard to cope with your disorder. If it is possible that there person was a delusion, then make sure to go see your psychiatrist and see if you need an adjustment in your meds. You may also need to get someone that you know is not a delusion to meet the person to check and see if they are "real" or just a delusion. And if they are real and can not deal with the fact that you have a disorder that can be controlled, then they do not deserve to be in your life any way. Just remember that you are a person living with the disorder and not the disorder itself. Do not let it define who you are.

Sorry if I'm being ignorant or offensive, but is schizophrenia where you hallucinate? Maybe you hallucinated that?

I have schizophrenia. It's where you hear and see things. Usually it's one or the other, but in my case it's both. It was most likely not a vision because it's someone new. Schizophrenia only picks on your brain and "hallucinates" people that you've already met before.

You can decide for yourself whether you want to educate this person about your mental illness or not. Personally I think he sounds like kind of a jerk and I'd avoid him, but that's just me.

Don't sweat OP, they meant "psycho/axe-murderer/stalker", in the same way that calling something "gay" doesn't mean "gay", but can mean lame, soppy or unmanly. They are just uneducated in the difference between neuroses, psychoses and schizphrenia. Hope it works out!!!

I am 100% sure since you say he's at least nice, that that guy will be absolutely mortified when he finds out. I've done and said stupid shit like that before, but it's all a part of learning. I've always thought life for some people like me is about learning how to NOT to be a dumbass.

I'm sorry, op. That's truly ignorance. Having schizophrenia does not mean you're a crazy homicidal maniac. I understand schizophrenia, as my uncle has it. I don't think people really understand what it is. However, I'm sure this person didn't mean any harm by it. He/she probably meant you two should be friends as long as you're not totally crazy, which you aren't. Do me a favor and, if you two become friends, please educate him/her on schizophrenia.

They probably weren't even there, it was just a visual and audio hallucination. Part of the disease man, sorry.
